Welcome to Blogmas Day 19! Today I thought it would be fun to tell you guys some Christmassy stories and funny things from when I was kid.
The first story is from when I was really little. When I was growing up, until about first or second grade, I was the shyest kid. So when it came to taking the family Christmas picture every year I was not into it, at all. So there’s many pictures of everyone smiling and me, being held by my mother, with my back turned to the camera desperately trying to not be in the picture. Any time I see those pictures I just laugh because I know they were sent out to our family and friends.
The next story was from when I was about five or six I want to say, it was definitely during the time when I believed in Santa. Basically when I was that age, one of my brothers would wake me up at around 7 AM on Christmas morning and take me to look at all the presents, then I would go try and wake up my parents who would tell me to come back at nine. I had noticed during the preview of the presents that there was a lot of the same wrapping paper on the presents and at that time my parents had to write ‘From Mom and Dad and ‘From Santa’ on everyone’s presents, so when we were all gathered around to open presents and it was my turn to pass them out and play Santa I was looking for one for myself and I had found two next to each other and one was from my parents and the other was from Santa and they were wrapped in the exact same paper. So I turned to my mom and I said “Mom, look, you and Santa used the same wrapping paper.” There was a moment where you could see the panic flash across her face and she said “Uh, yeah we did. We must shop at the same store.” Of course I believed her and just moved on and I know she was relieved that I did.
Second to we have a story I didn’t know until recently but it makes me laugh a lot. When I was around seven or eight I got this massive Barbie dream house/hotel thing, it was one of the coolest things and I remember having so much fun playing with it. I remember unwrapping the box and thinking “Wow, this thing is huge, this is so cool.” When I was planning Blogmas, I asked my mother if she could think of any funny Christmas stories that I couldn’t remember or didn’t know about and she mentioned that the year I got this Barbie thing, getting it home was a nightmare. She had sent my dad and one of my brothers to get it from the store and my dad didn’t have a huge car, so there was essentially no room for this box and my brother. So he had to put his seat back and hold this gigantic box the whole way home. She started laughing telling me this story and I can picture it in my head and it really made me laugh.
And lastly, a story from when I was in junior high and I was an eighth grader at this point. I was a choir kid in junior high, all three years, and I was a first soprano. We had a Christmas concert every year, it was us, the eighth and ninth graders, the seventh grade choir and the bands. We all did our songs separately and while we were waiting for the other choir kids to finish their set, we were sitting there kind of freaking out because we were singing You’re a mean one, Mr. Grinch and didn’t know all of the words. Normally we wouldn’t have the sheet music with us during a performance but on this night our teacher allowed us to. And it did make us feel a bit better, but there was one girl, a fellow first soprano, who had a solo and she sounded great but like the rest of the song, she didn’t know the words and she didn’t take her music with her when she went up to sing it. What ended up happening was she sang the first line, the second time through, even though it was supposed to be different and she just started laughing. The rest of us laugh/sang the end of the song and it was a really funny night. We knew there was a chance that the song was going to be kind of a mess, but the rest of our songs were solid and our teacher had a great sense of humor and we went with it.
That about wraps it up for this post, what are some of your favorite Christmas memories?
Until next time, have fun making memories and I can’t believe there’s only six days until Christmas :).
