Racing in Arizona

Hi everyone,

This weeks race took us to Phoenix, Arizona for the the Magic Dry Absorbent NHRA Arizona Nationals and a lot happened. Due to rain, there was only three sessions of qualifying. In Top Fuel, Jordan Vandergriff, nephew of Bob Vandergriff, made his debut and in Funny Car, Tommy Johnson Jr had an insane first round and if you haven’t seen that it’s on YouTube.

Starting with Top Fuel, the ladder looked like this; #1 Billy Torrence (3.66) vs #16 Terry Totten (6.82), #2 Terry McMillen (3.69) vs #15 Richie Crampton (6.06), #3 Antron Brown (3.71) vs #14 Steve Torrence (5.68), #4 Jordan Vandergriff (3.72) vs #13 Brittany Force (4.83), #5 Doug Kalitta (3.73) vs #12 Jim Maroney (4.37), #6 Austin Prock (3.73) vs #11 Clay Millican (4.25), #7 Leah Pritchett (3.74) vs #10 Cameron Ferre (4.08) and #8 Scott Palmer (3.78) vs #9 Mike Salinas (3.86). The winners and who they would face in the second round were Billy Torrence (3.73) and Mike Salinas (5.69), Jordan Vandergriff (3.69) and Doug Kalitta (3.74), Terry McMillen (3.72) and Leah Pritchett (3.72) and Antron Brown (3.72) and Austin Prock (3.74). The semifinals were Billy Torrence (3.68) vs Jordan Vandergriff (3.73) and Leah Pritchett (3.73) vs Antron Brown (4.19). The finals featured Billy Torrence (3.70) and the Capco team and Leah Pritchett (3.72) and the MOPAR team. With the winner being Billy Torrence (3.96). This is Billy’s first win of the season.

Next we have Funny Car, where the ladder looked like this; #1 Robert Hight (3.86) vs #16 Jeff Diehl (5.84), #2 Matt Hagan (3.88) vs #15 Phil Burkhart Jr (5.07), #3 Tim Wilkerson (3.88) vs #14 Jack Beckman (5.02), #4 Tommy Johnson Jr (3.91) vs #13 Jim Campbell (5.00), #5 JR Todd (3.91) vs #12 Terry Haddock (4.92), #6 Bob Tasca (3.93) vs #11 Blake Alexander (4.03), #7 Shawn Langdon (3.94) vs #10 Cruz Pedregon (3.96) and #8 John Force (3.95) vs #9 Ron Capps (3.95). The winners and who they face in the second round were Robert Hight (3.86) and John Force (3.93), Tommy Johnson Jr (4.10) and JR Todd (4.65), Matt Hagan (3.91) and Shawn Langdon (3.91) and Jack Beckman (3.90) and Bob Tasca (4.26). The semifinals were Robert Hight (3.87) vs JR Todd (3.96) and Matt Hagan (3.89) vs Bob Tasca (3.95). The finals featured JR Todd (3.91) and the DHL team and Matt Hagan (3.92) and the Sandvik Coromat team. With the winner being Matt Hagan (3.89). This is Matt’s first win of the season.

And finally we have Pro Stock, where the ladder looked like this; #1 Bo Butner (6.52) vs #16 Joey Grose (17.00), #2 Alex Laughlin (6.52) vs #15 Steve Graham (7.09), #3 Jason Line (6.52) vs #14 Alan Prusiensky (6.66), #4 Matt Hartford (6.53) vs #13 Val Smeland (6.61), #5 Rodger Brogdon (6.53) vs #12 Fernando Cuadra (6.57), #6 Kenny Delco (6.54) vs #11 Erica Enders (6.57), #7 Jeg Coughlin (6.54) vs #10 Greg Anderson (6.56) and #8 Deric Kramer (6.54) vs #9 Chris McGaha (6.54). The winners and who they would face in the second round were Bo Butner (6.55) and Deric Kramer (6.57), Matt Hartford (6.55) and Rodger Brogdon (6.54), Alex Laughlin (6.54) and Jeg Coughlin (6.56) and Jason Line (6.54) and Erica Enders (6.57). The semifinals were Deric Kramer (6.56) vs Matt Hartford (6.56) and Jeg Coughlin (6.56) vs Erica Enders (6.55). The finals featured Matt Hartford (6.56) and the Total Seal team and Jeg Coughlin (6.54) and the JEGS team. With the winner being Jeg Coughlin (6.55). This is Jeg’s first win of the season.

The next race will be the Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals, March 14-17 in Gainesville, Florida.
